From 1862 to 1869 the Central Pacific Railroad, building from the West, and the Union Pacific Railroad, building from the East, raced to complete the first transcontinental railroad. Alfred A. Hart was the official photographer for the Central Pacific during construction and published 364 views. In 1870 Watkins acquired the Hart negatives and published them under the series title Watkins Pacific Railroad.
