This is an uncommon occupational view of a Chinese worker at Thomas Selby’s smelting operations located in North Beach, San Francisco.  Selby, who was the 13th mayor of San Francisco, also commissioned Watkins to photograph his home. Watkins was often commissioned by business owners to document their facilities and to photograph the owner’s mansions in the Bay Area.
