Watkins #3560 - Palace Hotel, S.F. Interior View.
Larger Image

This is a view of the spectacular upper balcony of the Palace Hotel’s Great Court. Here, Watkins captured the opulence of the grand hotel, while understanding its importance as the meeting place for San Francisco’s high-powered “players.” In the 1870’s San Francisco was home to financiers and capitalists who made fortunes from the gold and silver mines in the Sierra and Comstock.

In this view, we see three power brokers:

  • Lloyd Tevis, President of Wells Fargo and Co., is at the center.
  • Alfred “Hog” Davis, banker, President and Co-Founder of Southern Pacific Railroad is on the left.
  • The man on the right is a banker by the name of Schroeder.
