Whale Fishing in Monterey Bay
c1881-83
Watkins #3896 - Whale Fishing in Monterey Bay

Shore Whaling began in California at Monterey Bay. It was a very profitable industry. One 70-foot whale could yield 175 barrels of oil and 1500 pounds of bone and could sell for over $2,000. Whaling stations were established along the coast. The whales would be killed and then towed to shore, where the fishermen would work on them.
