Notes:CMP notes: Agassiz Rock is located .32 km (1/5 mile) below and east of Union Point. Francois Matthes put it in the same category as the finely chiseled, castellated, and columnar features in the vicinity of Moran Point [see cat. nos. 269-271] and Union Point, which have been called forth by numerous intersecting joints, vertical, oblique, and horizontal. The best-known representative of this type of sculpture is the Agassiz Column, which stands, precariously balanced on a crumbling base (Matthes 1930, pp. 110-111). This view was made from a position a short distance .33 trail mile west of Glacier Point on the Four Mile Trail, a route from Yosemite Valley to Glacier Point that was surveyed and built by John Conway, who was one of the most famous of the early trail builders in Yosemite.
